Lazada

Lazada Group is a Southeast Asian e-commerce company founded by German startup incubator, Rocket Internet in 2012. The e-commerce platform initially sold own inventories to customers but later added a marketplace model to allow merchants to sell their products through Lazada.

By 2014, Lazada marketplace sellers accounted for 65% of total sales transactions. Lazada operated sites in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam while raising US$647 million over several investment rounds from investors such as Tesco, Temasek Holdings, Summit Partners, JPMorgan Chase and Rocket Internet.

In April 2016, Alibaba Group bought controlling stake in Lazada to support expansion plans in Southeast Asia. On the same year Lazada recorded a total of US$1.36 billion in annual sales across the six markets, making it the largest and most mature e-commerce player in the region. Lazada also grabbed 'Redmart' online grocery store to further consolidate the e-commerce market especially in Singapore.

Moving forward, Lazada has its work cut out to counter challengers such as Shoppee, Tokopedia and thousands of rising e-commerce players, hustling for a significant share in the region's Internet economy which is expected to hit US$200 billion by 2025 (according to a joint e-commerce report by Google and Temasek).

Current Company Valuation - over US$3 billion (estimation)
