Tokopedia was founded in 2006 by William Tanuwijaya and Leontinus Alpha Edison. Tokopedia is an online marketplace similar to Bukalapak, Lazada, Shoppee and BliBli which host million of sellers products from Indonesia.
According to web data from Similarweb, Tokopedia ranks first in terms of traffic as opposed to other marketplaces in the region including Lazada in the second quarter of 2018.
In late 2014, Tokopedia made the headlines as the first technology company in Southeast Asia to secure a US$100 million investment from Sequoia Capital and SoftBank Internet and Media Inc (SIMI).
In 2017, Alibaba invested yet another magnanimous US$1.1 billion in Tokopedia.
