The Southeast Asian region received three times more investment in 2017 as opposed to the previous year.
The region secured several over a billion dollar, late-stage funding deals, between 2017 and first half of 2018, in ride hailing, super apps and e-commerce.
A significant amount of early stage funding was also pumped into fintech, AI based customer experience and gaming, eventhough the number of total funding deals dropped slightly.
With 10 unicorns and several more in the pipe the Southeast Asian startup scene is beginning to pick rapid pace - an encouraging signal that several critical investors have issued regionally focused funding portfolios.
Note: The Unicorns listed below are updated quarterly and kindly click the links for more detail.
Trax - is a AI startup based out of Singapore which uses combination of computer vision and deep learning to increase performance of consumer products in stores. The 5th unicorn for Singapore officially puts the island nation in the lead position for startup unicorns.
Bukalapak - is the 4th Indonesian online marketplace startup to join the ranks of Southeast Asian unicorns. Unlike other Indonesian unicorns, Bukalapak is heavily backed by local investors at this point of time.
Tokopedia - is an Indonesian based e-commerce marketplace similar to Lazada and Shoppee.
Razer Inc - is a global gaming hardware manufacturer based out of Singapore and recently ventured into e-payment business with MOL acquisition for US$ 100 million (branded as Razer Pay).
Traveloka is a leading travel aggregator based in Indonesia providing flight and accomodation search and booking services on a B2C model.
Lazada Group is an online marketplace owned by Alibaba with operations in every country in the region. Lazada is currently running intensive sales programs to ensure its lead in the market.
Revolution Precrafted is a Phillipines based Unicorn revolutionising property market by enabling customers to order prefabricated designer homes online.
Go Jek is a ride hailing company which originated from Indonesia. Go Jek has recently partnered up with Tokopedia and Traveloka in Indonesia to further extend user base of its app.
Grab is a Singapore based ride hailing company which recently acquired Uber operation in Southeast Asia and probably the most priced Unicorn in the region. Grab and Go Jek compete head to head with mirror image services to dominate the regional market.
Sea Group was previously known as Garena, a gaming platform but in the recent years have diversified business in e-commerce (Shoppee) and payment (Airpay). But the gaming platform remains the strongest performer in the revenue mix though the growth in e-commerce segment is picking up, thanks to the company's 'mobile first' strategy.
